This Church St. show welcomes Hate-rs
>>> The name of the group I Hate Todd is impressive enough —I mean after all, who would be likely to say “I hate I Hate Todd” ever, since they’d sound like a mouth-breathing mental defective. So bonus points for that, but really, this niftily dressed 5-piece Art Rock show band lives up to their name and stage presentation with very interesting and inventive songs. I was hugely impressed and have to say “I really like I Hate Todd” and I don’t care how stupid that sounds!
Todd Preston is the lead crooner-cum-ringmaster and, presumably target of the “hate”. Nelson Sobral is the ace guitarist, Capucine Onn adds awesome violin/fiddle and vocals, and Kev Carney and Troy Larabie hold down the bottom end on four-string and drums respectively.
One of their tunes, “Zombie Love” (which is about what you’d expect from a song with a title like that) is already released as a single and will also be part of their debut album, which should be out about now according to what they told me when I saw them at Relish in late December. So perhaps you’ll be able to pick up a copy tonight if you go the new The Cavern bar on Church St. not too far from C’est What, where they share a bill with the band Big Name Actors. (The Facebook event promo for this show is hilarious, by the way —a quality that seems to loom large on this band’s priority list. -Gary 17, www.torontomoon.ca
