Fundraising for injured Steve Madden at Scarborough jams
/SCARBOROUGH/
Although putting up posters for gigs by musicians has pretty much gone the way of the dodo bird except for in the venue where they take place, some old school performers still make the rounds, spreading the word, in hopes that it will enhance the turnout and lead to re-bookings.
For effervescent veteran guitarist, singer and Rock songwriter Steve Madden, however, doing so ended up having a disastrous result recently when, leaving a place where he was putting up the playbills, he was hit by a car and dragged 20 feet, causing him serious injuries.
His shoulder, ankle, foot and four ribs were broken, according to my source. (Steve is notoriously not online and his girlfriend seems to have disappeared from my social media contact list since they discontinued their subscription last year, so I’m going on second-hand info here.)
Apparently it will be some time before he’s even able to walk, let alone play a gig. So some of his musical colleagues have filled in for him on a couple of shows that had been scheduled, including one for Steve’s Blackjack band at McGradie’s Pub this past week, and now have mounted a campaign to raise funds for him at their upcoming shows.
Tommy Rocker, who hosts a Sunday afternoon jam at the new Centro Pizza at 3406 Kingston Rd. in the burb’s West Hill area, tells me that several people have donated items that will be drawn for at a show on a not-yet-announced date and that both he and longtime off-and-on Madden bandmate Dan Walek, who runs both the Sunday night jam at McGradie’s and a Monday acoustic open stage there, will be holding 50/50 draws and selling the draw tickets at all their forthcoming gigs. Another longtime Madden bandmate, Al Reilly, has also pitched in to the effort.
Draw prizes donated so far include a new guitar donated by Earl Johnson on behalf of ZONE Music, a new bass and bass amp, a new snare drum put in by John DiCiommo of Drumworld, and many other items. It’s reminiscent, really of the way the Scarborough community rallied around Wayne Orgill in May of 2012, when many of the same Scarborough stalwarts participated in a fundraiser to help him replace a stolen set of drums.
Tommy’s jam runs 3-7 p.m., then Walek’s McGradie’s event takes place 7-11, so if you want to help Steve out and see (or help make) some great Rock ‘n’ Roll music in the bargain, it’s pretty easy to attend either or both of these events.
