Das Fagott Mannschaft brings big schtick to Relish tonight
\TORONTO EAST\
Although you might think that tonight’s five-piece band at Relish tapas bar and music emporium is a hold-over from the PRIDE weekend, Das Fagott Mannschaft, while it certainly has a big schtick, isn’t at all about what you might be imagining.
In pretty much every language except English, the word “fagott” (as opposed to “faggot”) means bassoon. And believe it or not “mannschaft” is actually a German word meaning “team” —not, as you may have construed, something that might have been on display during yesterday’s Church Street parade.
DFM, as they sometimes, understandably, call themselves, is an instrumental bassoon quartet (plus a drummer, Laura Savage) that plays Pop songs in a way you’ve never heard before.
I caught their show last September at Relish (at 2152 Danforth Ave. a block east of Woodbine Ave.) and was absolutely delighted with how they delivered tunes like “Yellow Submarine” and “Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da” by The Beatles, “Poker Face” by Madonna and even a Nancy Sinatra tune! The night I saw they them they were also joined for a tune by Soul Rap sensation Bryan Van Dusen, who had them huffing and puffing the music to “Gangnam Style” while he improvised lyrics to “Bassoon Style” in his usual brilliantly over-the-top manner.
At the end of the night as they bid adieu, all I could think of was “I hope I get to hear this band again real ba-soon!” Tonight, Monday, June 30, that’s possible as they’re back at Relish 8-11, with no cover charge.
