BBQ night with Shawn Brush is worth a road trip to Oakville

Every Monday out in the sedate suburban wilds of the main drag of Oakville Ontario, local music fans with an appetite for both fine tunes and good grub eagerly anticipate going to Moonshine Café, located at 137 Kerr Street a couple of short blocks north of the Lakeshore Road East.
On those evenings Moonshine owner John Marlatt mans the impressive barbeque out front of the cozy live music emporium (it doesn’t have a kitchen, as such) and starting at 6 p.m. he’s cranking out steaks, beef and veggie burgers, chicken or pork and serving them up with a side salad and baked potato for just $8.95.
Starting at 8 p.m. a weekly guest host musician does a feature set and runs a loosely organized open stage night. The club has a full backline in place and Marlatt also mans the sound board –after remembering to wipe the bbq sauce off his fingers, one hopes! For the musical portion of the event there’s a paltry $5 cover, which is paid to the hosting musician.
The last Monday of every month for at least the past couple of years the guest host has been Halton musical gem Shawn “The Krooked Cowboy” Brush, whose artfully crafted, sometimes piquant, other times amusing and often inspiring originals blend Roots, Country and Blues.
If you’re taking the highway, look for the signs advising which exit to take for Kerr St. and go south. If you’re taking the GO Train (they run every 30 minutes these days) you can catch the #17 Kerr bus at the station to take you to the club’s front door (and back) approximately every half hour till about 11.
