Country covers and originals band Big Tobacco and the Pickers are doing double duty today, with shows at Cameron House and Dakota Tavern giving fans who haven’t yet done so an opportunity to pick up a copy of their latest album, released exactly one year ago today.
As we told you then, their sophomore disc, The King Is Gone, is an interesting “jamboree of various traditional styles from the genre touching on its traditional topics, making it a kind of Country music festival on glass.”
The only thing we might want to add to that is that you can actually also get this album on vinyl at any of their shows, including today’s 6-8 gig at Cameron (408 Queen St. W. a block west of Spadina) or the 10-close showcase at Dakota (249 Ossignton at Dundas St. W.). In their case having a vinyl version seems very appropriate, given the retro roots of their sound and musical inspiration. The wax disc comes with a gatefold cover and makes it a great addition to the library of the increasing number of music fans who are rediscovering (or just plain discovering in the case of many younger audiophiles) this warm, rich medium.
There’s no cover for the Cameron show but the normal door charge at Dakota is $10 for this calibre of group.
