\ TO EAST \
The British Royals have been in the news this weekend, of course, and how convenient for Harry and Meghan to have picked the Queen Victoria Day weekend to hold their nuptials spectacular.
There are a couple of musically spectacular shows happening late afternoon into early evening in the east end today that will also harken back to older times (before the third weekend in May became better known to Canadians, at least, as May Two-Four Weekend) when life was simpler and music more important.
(I say music was more important because fifty years ago, around when most of the tunes you’ll hear at the two vintage shows happening this afternoon, popular music was far more central to the social upheaval then taking place —key to usher in the “media age”— than the role it plays todays as merely one of many diverse capturers of mental and emotional attention.)
At Black Swan Tavern (154 Danforth Ave., Pete Otis holds the 4-8 season finale for the SongTown/Mike McKenna monthly Blues & Boogie Party series, while at The Duke Live (1225 Queen Street East) old time Rock ‘n’ Roll band Little Peter and the Elegants take to the stage as part of that room’s throwback Sundays series from 5-9.
At the Swan, McKenna and his smooth, versatile Slidewinder backing band (Tom Robertson, Hap Roderman and Rob Kirkpatrick) back a pair of featured special guests who both performed with iconic Canadian R&B/Rock band Crowbar among several other combos of similar ilk. Singer/keyboardist Ray Harrison was also a member of Cameo Blues Band, for example, while the other guest crooner, John Dickie, was also with Mondo Combo among others, all outfits that do the old stuff with style and authenticity. McKenna of course helped define some of that himself with his seminal Blues slide guitar that five decades later is still a how-to for young players across the world.
The night also includes sets by acoustic duo Amber Durette & Alex Matthew and songwriters David Morrison, Jay Moonah, Pat Little, Stephen Court and organizer Otis. And cover charge is just $10!
Cover is also only $10 to check out the show at The Duke, which has a great stage that will be put to good use by the eight-piece Elegants troupe anchored by Peter Toller. The group regularly performs at Legion halls and for various organizations’ special event dance nights (which usually get sold out well in advance) as well as at weddings and other private affairs. It also puts on its own fundraiser shows such as their annual benefit for the Compass organization we told you about back in early 2016. A first-class act of veteran players who were there when the music of the ‘50s and ‘60s came out —grooving to it on their transistor radios!
With tomorrow a holiday I’d expect both these rooms to be if not jumping (a lot of those who’ll be in attendance are well past those days!) at least very busy on the dancefloors.
