Double bass player Abbey Sholzberg was gone for a stint in western Canada for over a month in late November through the holiday period and no doubt all of the several groups he performs with missed his solid musicianship and amiable presence on their gigs during that time.
He’s versatile, as we’ve written before, backing a wide variety of performers in different genres that I’ve seen over the years, most recently holding down the bottom end for the eclectic Jazz/Pop Jacques Russell Trio featuring Michel Neray.
But Abbey is particularly drawn to Gypsy Swing Jazz, of the Django Reinhart style and is a member of both Django Gypsy Jam and Django Gypsy Jam in that genre, both of which have performed often at Relish at 2152 Danforth Ave. in TO’s east end.
He’s also the stand up basist for another group that peforms similarly Gypsy Jazz styled tunes, the John Wayne Swingtet, which appears at Relish tonight for the early 7-9 show. No cover and a very enjoyable outing.
