Darrell McNeill -Gary 17

Darrell McNeill -Gary 17

How good of a guitar player is Gibson hollow-body (and assorted other models) six-stringer Darrell McNeill of the David Love Band?

Well, start with the fact that he is the guitarist in the DLB —not exactly a run of the mill assignment considering that the eponymous leader of the trio is himself a renowned guitarist of the first rank whose c.v. includes many years of touring and recording with Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman as well as nearly 20 years as a member of The Carpet Frogs, and current membership in the Classic Albums Live troupe.

Yet Love chooses to play bass in the DLB, trusting McNeill carry the melodic freight on a diverse Pop Rock repertoire of sometimes challenging tunes from the psychedelic Sixties like “Crimson and Clover” and a wide range of seminal chart hits. What does that tell you?

So when McNeill mentions to me that “oh by the way, I also play in another band” in his Brampton stomping grounds, I tend to suspect that it’s probably a pretty decent combo. The owners of Oscar’s Roadhouse, one of the city’s two premier Rock/Pop rooms (Jake’s Boathouse being the other) for over 15 years evidently think so, since they’ve rebooked his Fifteen Stone group for a show tonight. Starts at 9 and there’s no cover.

If your appetite has been whetted for some great guitar playing but Brampton is out of your range, you could always pay a $30+ cover charge and check out a collection of some of the best local Telecaster pickers ever assembled, doing a “Masters Of The Telecaster” (Why not just “’Caster Masters” I wonder?) show at Hugh’s Room in west TO.  Tony “Wild T” Springer, Danny Marks, Dylan Wickens, Pat Rush and Mike McKenna can all be considered as belonging in the company of Blues-Rock guitar legends from the ages.
